Egg Recall Linked to Salmonella Outbreak, CDC Says: Here's What to Know

In a recent food safety alert, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) linked a Salmonella outbreak to eggs from Milo’s Poultry Farms, LLC. The outbreak has caused at least 65 illnesses and 24 hospitalizations in nine states, and the CDC has urged consumers to avoid these eggs.

The recall includes all eggs sold under Milo’s Poultry Farms or Tony’s Fresh Market brand names. All expiration dates are affected, and anyone who has purchased these eggs should not consume them. The recall notice, which was also posted on the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website, contains photos of the contaminated egg cartons.

States Affected:

While the majority of cases have been reported in Wisconsin, other affected states include California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Utah, and Virginia. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far.

The eggs were distributed mainly in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Illinois through retail stores and foodservice distributors. Milo’s Poultry Farms has ceased production and is working on thorough testing and sanitization of their farms and processing equipment.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infection:

Most Salmonella infections result in symptoms of food poisoning, such as:

  • Diarrhea

  • Stomach cramps

  • Fever

Symptoms typically begin within 6 hours to 6 days after consuming contaminated food. While most individuals recover without needing medical attention, certain groups are at higher risk for severe illness. This includes young children, elderly adults, pregnant individuals, and those with compromised immune systems.

When to Seek Medical Help:

If you experience any of the following symptoms, the CDC advises contacting a doctor:

  • Diarrhea and a fever higher than 102°F

  • Diarrhea lasting more than three days

  • Bloody stools

  • Inability to keep liquids down

  • Signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth or decreased urination
