Raccoon Roundworm Infections Reported in Los Angeles County

Health Officials Issue Warnings After Two Cases of a Rare Parasitic Infection

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has confirmed two cases of raccoon roundworm infections, scientifically known as Baylisascaris procyonis, in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. This rare parasitic infection originates from the intestinal tract of raccoons and can have serious health consequences when transmitted to humans.

The infection, though uncommon, can affect the brain, spinal cord, and eyes, potentially leading to conditions like brain inflammation and eye disease. After maturing in a raccoon's intestines, the worms release eggs through the animal’s feces. These eggs become infectious within two to four weeks and can survive for years in the environment, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

While raccoons are the natural host, other species, including dogs and humans, can accidentally ingest the eggs by consuming contaminated soil, water, or objects. Certified infection control expert Erica Susky noted that individuals can contract the parasite through accidental ingestion of the larvae or eggs, which can be found in raccoon feces or soil.

High-Risk Groups

Young children and people with developmental disabilities are at higher risk since they are more likely to put contaminated objects in their mouths. The infection, however, is not contagious between humans.

Though raccoon roundworm infections are rare, the Los Angeles County health department expressed concern due to the significant number of raccoons residing near human habitats. Despite fewer than 25 confirmed cases in the U.S. (as of 2018), some may go unreported due to misdiagnosis. Out of the known cases, six deaths have occurred.

The severity of infection depends on the number of eggs ingested and their movement within the body. In some cases, individuals show no symptoms, but more severe cases can lead to fatigue, nausea, liver enlargement, blindness, and even coma.

Preventive Measures

To minimize the risk of infection, health officials recommend avoiding direct contact with raccoons and their droppings. Keep pets indoors when possible, and bring them for regular veterinary check-ups to prevent parasite transmission. Always wash hands after spending time outdoors, particularly before handling food.

Proper hygiene practices, like frequent handwashing, covering sandboxes, and closing open spaces in attics or crawlspaces, can significantly reduce the risk of encountering raccoon roundworm. By keeping pets healthy and wild animals at a distance, you can help protect your family from this rare but dangerous infection.
