FDA Issues Safety Alert for Cronobacter Contamination in Infant Formula

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a safety alert regarding Cronobacter contamination in Crecelac Infant Powdered Goat Milk Infant Formula and other products distributed by Dairy Manufacturers Inc. This alert follows the company's recall initiated on May 24 due to non-compliance with FDA regulations. On May 29, the FDA discovered Cronobacter in a sample collected from a retail store in Texas, prompting this additional alert.

Cronobacter can cause severe infections like sepsis and meningitis in infants, leading to complications such as brain abscesses, developmental delays, motor impairments, and even death. Symptoms in infants may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths, or abnormal body movements.

Parents and caregivers are advised not to use the affected products and to seek alternatives that meet FDA safety standards. If an infant shows symptoms of Cronobacter infection, contact a healthcare provider immediately.

The FDA assures there is no current impact on the overall supply of infant formula and continues to work with Dairy Manufacturers Inc. to ensure the recall is executed effectively.
